I've never had a son serve so I cannot relate but I did send my husband off twice in the Korean conflict on a Navy ship for two 6 month periods, and I was p.g. both times. That was also in the day when letters were the only communication. They'd come in "bunches" 6 to 8 at a time. Praise God they have cell phones and internet now and can keep in touch more.
